Composition
Burberrys for Men is Burberry's first men's fragrance, launched in 1981. Described as a classic leather chypre, it opens with bergamot, artemisia and juniper over a heart of jasmine, patchouli, vetiver and pepper, drying down to leather, amber, moss and musk. It was later reformulated and renamed Burberry Men in the 1990s.
To me this smells like a wood-panelled library in 1985, where the leather armchairs have absorbed forty years of pipe smoke and good decisions. Artemisia and juniper snap green at the start, then the classic bones show — mossy oakmoss, worn leather, patchouli and amber glowing like lamplight on mahogany. It's unapologetically old-school: the scent of a man who still writes letters and means them. Time has only made it more distinguished, like a tweed jacket that fits better every decade.
