Composition
Bluebell is Penhaligon's 1978 floral-green by Michael Pickthall — the pure distillation of bluebell woods. Citruses open into hyacinth, lily-of-the-valley, rose, cyclamen and jasmine, over galbanum, cloves and cinnamon. Green, wet and untamed — spring's rebirth, smelling of moss and rain.
To me this smells like a bluebell wood in late April — citruses bright through the canopy, then hyacinth, lily of the valley, rose, and jasmine, a whole woodland floor of white and blue. Galbanum, cloves, and cinnamon underneath are the leaf litter, green and spiced. The cyclamen is cool and watery, like shade on a hot day, and the galbanum at the base is green stems — the whole woodland, roots and all. The pure distillation of an English spring: green, floral, and impossibly fresh. You can hear birdsong in it. Beginner-friendly.
