Composition
Tom Ford's 2006 debut fragrance, an oriental-floral created by David Apel and Pierre Negrin of Givaudan. Truffle, gardenia, black currant, ylang-ylang, jasmine, bergamot, mandarin orange and Amalfi lemon open it; orchid, spices, gardenia, fruity notes, ylang-ylang, jasmine and lotus form the heart; Mexican chocolate, patchouli, vanilla, incense, amber, sandalwood, vetiver and white musk close it. Dark and opulent, built around an imaginary black orchid accord.
To me this smells like a midnight greenhouse where the orchids are plotting something. Truffle and black currant open dark and earthy, gardenia and ylang adding a heavy white-floral opulence, bergamot and citrus flashing like lightning in the distance. It is Tom Ford's debut, and it announced that he was not here to be subtle. The heart is orchid and spice, and the base is pure decadence: Mexican chocolate, patchouli, vanilla, incense, amber, sandalwood, vetiver. It is sweet, earthy, animalic, and enormous — a scent that enters the room before you and stays after you leave. Iconic, and iconically much. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
