Composition
Superstitious is a women's eau de parfum launched by Frederic Malle in 2016, composed by Dominique Ropion in collaboration with designer Alber Elbaz. A grand aldehyde floral with classic architecture reinterpreted: Turkish rose and Egyptian jasmine with peach over incense, vetiver, patchouli and amber. The bottle carries Elbaz's own eye sketch; the scent is at once modern and evocative of the great classics.
A cloud of soft, frothy aldehydes opens — fizzy and sheer rather than sharp — before rose and jasmine emerge, cool and elegant, touched with peach skin. Underneath, incense smoke, earthy patchouli and Haitian vetiver give it depth and a quiet smoulder. It is distant and poised, like a ballerina glimpsed from the balcony: beautiful, a little untouchable. Beginners expecting a warm sweet floral may find it cool and abstract; it is a connoisseur's aldehydic, best appreciated with patience.
