Composition
French Lover is a masculine eau de parfum from Frederic Malle, launched in 2007. It opens with Galbanum and Spices. The heart reveals Angelica, Cedar and Incense settling into a base of Vetiver, Oakmoss and White Musk. Its character is defined by Woody, Musky and Amber accords.
A walk through a pine forest with a priest. Galbanum opens shockingly green — crushed stems, bitter leaves — angelica adds an herbal, almost medicinal edge. Then incense smoke drifts through the trees, vetiver and oakmoss darken the forest floor, cedar towers overhead. White musk just barely softens it. It is the greenest, most uncompromising thing Malle ever made. Nature, unsweetened. The angelica is the strange herbal heart of it — green, musky, almost animalic — like crushed stems and something wilder. Oakmoss darkens everything like forest shadow. It is not trying to be loved, only to be true. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
