Opus XIII - Silver Oud is a woody-amber eau de parfum for women and men by Cécile Zarokian, launched in 2020 in The Library Collection. Inspired by Stendhal's 'The Red and the Black', it opens with patchouli, cypriol and Virginia cedar, develops oud Assam and Madagascar vanilla in the heart, and settles into ambrarome, birch, guaiac wood and castoreum.
To me this smells like a forest that does not want you there. Patchouli and cypriol open dark and rooty — damp soil, crushed leaves — with Virginia cedar standing over it all like tall cold trees. Then the oud Assam arrives, and it is not the sweet Dubai-mall oud. This is raw: smoky, leathery, with vanilla trying to soften edges that refuse to be softened. Birch tar and guaiac wood burn underneath, and the castoreum adds this animal warmth — like something wild breathing nearby in the dark. It is Stendhal's ambition bottled: beautiful, cold, and a little ruthless. You do not wear this to be liked. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
