Composition
The legendary 1988 bombshell created by Jean-Claude Ellena for Balenciaga and later revived by Ted Lapidus: cooked fruits and basil over a huge bouquet of white flowers and honey, drying down to smoky leather, vanilla, oakmoss and amber. Pure 1980s opulence.
To me this smells like cutting bergamot with a pocketknife, the fresh wound of the wood releasing plum into the air. Then honey, jasmine, tuberose, carnation, heliotrope, magnolia, gardenia, lily of the valley, orchid, marigold and rose soften in, soft as breath, like the scene settling around you. By evening all that remains is ambergris, vanilla, leather, tonka bean, patchouli, musk, sandalwood, cedar, oakmoss and styrax, like a memory you can't place. This is what a warm kitchen and an open door would smell like if it had a perfume. Beginner-friendly.
