Rake & Ruin (2018, Revenants, perfumer Julie Dunkley) summons William Hogarth's gin-soaked 18th-century London: the botanical ingredients of gin with dark woods and musks bringing 'all manner of Vice and Wickedness'. Gin, juniper, angelica, licorice and peppers open it; pine, castoreum, cade and orris form the heart; woody smoke, sandalwood and musk ground the base.

Rake & Ruin is moral decay in a bottle: rivers of gin, black tar smoke, a ghost of an unwashed animal, powder taming the soot. Bigger and dirtier than Iron Duke -- sweat, dirt and powder over dark woods. Beginners: not for the faint-hearted; intoxicating, debauched, unforgettable.
