Composition
Ormonde Woman is the signature feminine eau de parfum of Ormonde Jayne, launched in 2002 and composed by Geza Schoen. It opens with cardamom, coriander and grass oil, the heart built on rare black hemlock absolute with violet and jasmine absolute. Vetiver, cedarwood, sandalwood and amber form the base. The house's debut fragrance and a modern chypre classic.
To me this smells like a pine forest that decided to become a perfume — grass, cardamom and coriander opening green and spicy, and then black hemlock rising in the heart, coniferous and strange and utterly arresting, like nothing else in perfumery. Violet and jasmine soften it with a floral veil, and vetiver, cedar, sandalwood and amber ground it in deep, resinous woods. The most famous weird-beautiful scent in niche perfumery, and it earns every bit of its reputation — just not on a first date with fragrance. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
