Composition
Sampaquita is a unisex eau de parfum from Ormonde Jayne, launched in 2004 and composed by Geza Schoen. Named for the national flower of the Philippines, it opens with litchi, grass oil, bergamot and magnolia, developing into a heart of sampaquita absolute, freesia, muguet, rose and water lilies. The base combines musk, vetiver, moss and ambrette seed.
To me this smells like a Manila garden after rain — magnolia and grass wet and green, litchi bright as a peeled fruit, bergamot sparkling off the leaves. Water lily, freesia, jasmine, and rose bloom out of the damp, and musk, ambrette, and vetiver underneath are warm skin and wet earth. The ambrette is musky and slightly pear-like, warm skin after rain, and the oakmoss is a green shadow under the flowers — paradise with roots. Named for the Philippine national flower, and it wears like a garland: fresh, floral, and quietly luminous. Beginner-friendly.
