Composition
Opus X is an oriental-floral eau de parfum for women and men, launched in 2016 as part of the Library Collection. It opens with May rose, red rose and rose, develops geranium, leather and a varnish accord in the heart, and settles into metallic notes, Laotian oud, ylang-ylang and ambrarome.
To me this smells like an art gallery after hours. Roses — May rose, red rose, roses on roses — bloom huge in the foreground, so lush they are almost too much. Then you notice the room: geranium green and sharp, leather like old gallery benches, and a varnish accord — actual varnish, the smell of oil paintings drying — that makes the whole thing feel strange and intoxicating. The base turns cold and modern: metallic notes, Laotian oud, ambrarome glowing like track lighting, ylang-ylang smoothing the edges. It is beautiful and deeply weird. A masterpiece you are not sure you are allowed to touch. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
