Composition
Opus VIII is a woody-floral eau de parfum for women and men by Pierre Negrin and Richard Herpin, launched in 2014 as part of the Library Collection. It opens with jasmine, ylang-ylang and orange flower, develops frankincense, saffron, ginger, vetiver and guaiac wood in the heart, and settles into balsam, benzoin and Jamaican bay.
To me this is a library of rare resins. Jasmine, ylang-ylang and orange flower open white and heady, then the doors close and it is all frankincense, saffron, ginger, vetiver and guaiac wood, dark and medicinal and thrilling. Balsam and benzoin in the base make it thick as syrup, with Jamaican bay adding a strange, almost clove-like warmth. It is the most intellectual of the Library Collection, less a perfume than a thesis on incense. Beautiful, but it demands you meet it halfway. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
