Composition
Opus VI is a woody-amber-oriental eau de parfum for women and men, launched in 2011 as part of the Library Collection. It opens with Sichuan pepper, incense and pimenta racemosa, develops periploca graeca, cypriol and patchouli in the heart, and settles into ambranum, Z11, rock rose and sandalwood.
To me this smells like standing too close to a temple brazier during evening aarti — Sichuan pepper crackles in the air, numbing and electric, and incense smoke rises in thick grey ribbons. Pimenta racemosa adds a clove-dark heat, like the air itself is spiced. Underneath the smoke there's amber glowing like coals, rock rose resin, and sandalwood — but it's amber with teeth, smoky and leathery, not sweet. This is Amouage's dark mass: ritualistic, severe, almost confrontational. It doesn't invite you in; it dares you to keep up. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
