To me this smells like a souk at midnight, after the crowds have gone and only the serious traders remain. Nutmeg and black pepper crackle like coals, leather creaks like a saddle in the dark, and olibanum and myrrh rise in resinous waves — frankincense burned down to its bitter, beautiful core. Saffron threads through it all, red-gold and unmistakable. Labdanum and vetiver darken the base like wet stone. This is night as a substance: dense, spiced, and a little bit dangerous.
