Composition
Néa (2015) by Luca Maffei is a gourmand floral extrait for women inspired by Rodin's marble sculptures and the Byzantine era. Dates, pomegranate, davana, palm leaf and black pepper open it; dried plum, Damask rose and jasmine sambac form the heart; caramel, vanilla, benzoin, tonka, cashmeran, ambroxan, patchouli and musk ground the base. It won the 2016 Art and Olfaction Award.
Néa is frozen marble blooming into warmth: icy fruit and spice over velvety roses and jasmine, melting into caramel, vanilla and benzoin with a musky-ambroxan glow. The cold/warm contrast is the whole drama -- like marble under a sculptor's caress. Beginners: surprisingly easy for a gourmand; the fruit keeps it modern, the drydown is pure comfort.
