Composition
Fahrenheit by Dior is a men's Aromatic Fougere fragrance launched in 1988 and sold as an Eau de Toilette. It opens with nutmeg flower, lavender, cedar, chamomile, mandarin orange, hawthorn, bergamot and lemon, centers on violet leaf with nutmeg, cedar, sandalwood, carnation and floral notes, and dries down to leather, vetiver, musk, amber, patchouli and tonka bean.
To me this smells like a flower caught in an engine fire — and I mean that as praise. Violet leaf hits first, green and strange, almost like petrol on wet leaves, with lavender and chamomile softening the edges. Then leather floods in, dark and smoky, nutmeg and cedar burning underneath like a workshop at dusk. The base is all vetiver and amber over musk and patchouli, warm metal cooling after a long drive. It is the most divisive legend in perfumery for a reason. Not for beginners — this one chooses you, not the other way around.
