Composition
En Passant is a women's eau de parfum launched by Frederic Malle in 2000, composed by Olivia Giacobetti around the perfumer's favourite flower, lilac. French for 'passing through', it captures a spring garden in a moment of happiness: cucumber and watery green notes around a tender lilac heart, on a soft bed of white musk, wheat and cedar. Delicate, transparent and quietly joyful.
A dewy burst of cucumber and green leaves opens it — cool water on skin — before the most realistic lilac in perfumery blooms: soft, powdery, faintly honeyed, like standing under a flowering tree in April. It never shouts; the whole composition feels like a held breath, fading into clean musk and pale woods. In India it is a beautiful monsoon and winter-morning scent, though summer heat will swallow it quickly. Very beginner-friendly for lovers of soft florals, but those wanting longevity should know it is deliberately sheer.
