Composition
Eau Sauvage by Dior is a men's Citrus Aromatic fragrance launched in 1966 and sold as an Eau de Toilette. It opens with lemon, bergamot, basil, rosemary, caraway and fruity notes, develops a heart of jasmine, coriander, carnation, patchouli, orris root, sandalwood, rose, lavender and hedione, and rests on a base of oakmoss, vetiver, musk and amber.
To me this smells like the French Riviera in 1966 — and somehow still today. Lemon and bergamot explode first, basil and rosemary green and wild like a hillside above the sea. The heart is a whole sunlit garden: jasmine, carnation, rose, lavender, orris, all of it precise and glowing. Then oakmoss and vetiver pull it into the shade, earthy and masculine, the smell of old stone and good manners. The blueprint every fresh fragrance since has been copying. A classic any nose can appreciate.
