Composition
Dune by Dior is a women's Oriental Woody fragrance launched in 1991 and sold as an Eau de Toilette. It opens with aldehydes, Brazilian rosewood, mandarin, bergamot and peony, moves through a floral heart of lily, ylang-ylang, jasmine and rose, and settles into a woody-amber base of sandalwood, amber, benzoin, oakmoss, vanilla, patchouli and musk.
To me this smells like being lost in a beautiful desert. Aldehydes shimmer first like heat haze, mandarin and bergamot dry and windswept, Brazilian rosewood giving it this strange, dusty woodiness. The floral heart — lily, ylang-ylang, jasmine, rose — feels like flowers remembered rather than seen, half-buried in sand. Then the base: sandalwood, amber, benzoin, oakmoss, a marine saltiness that never leaves, like the sea is somewhere just beyond the dunes. Austere, haunting, utterly unlike anything else. Not for beginners — this one asks for patience.
