Composition
Derby is a masculine eau de toilette from Guerlain, launched in 1985. It opens with Bergamot and Orange. The heart reveals Carnation, Spices and Exotic Woods settling into a base of Leather, Birch, Woody Notes and Patchouli. Its character is defined by Leather, Warm Spicy and Woody accords.
This is a 1985 leather club, and I mean that literally. Bergamot and orange open bright for about a minute, and then carnation, spices and exotic woods turn it dark — and the leather arrives, with birch smoke curling around it like a cigar in a wood-paneled room. It smells like money, horses, and decisions. Woody notes and patchouli dry it down into something dry and leathery and austere. This is Guerlain at its most masculine and most uncompromising. It doesn't flatter you; it tests you. Pass the test and it's magnificent. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
