Composition
Cartier's landmark 1998 Eau de Toilette for men by Jean-Claude Ellena, the woody-floral-musk that launched a new olfactory family of spicy woody freshness. A cascade of citrus and spices — bitter orange, caraway, birch, coriander — over an iris, juniper and cardamom heart, settling into vetiver, tea, cedar, leather and oakmoss.
It opens like a burst of sparkling citrus peel dusted with caraway and coriander — bright, peppery, almost fizzy. Then the iris and orris root arrive, powdery and elegant, wrapped in cardamom, juniper and a whisper of cumin-like spice that makes it unmistakably Declaration. The dry-down is a smoky, earthy trail of vetiver, black tea, cedar and soft leather over oakmoss. In India this shines in cooler months and air-conditioned offices; the cumin-spice edge can turn challenging in peak heat. A masterpiece for the patient — beginners should sample first, as its spiciness divides opinion.
