Composition
Dark Aoud is an eau de parfum by Montale, launched in 2011 and composed by Pierre Montale. It opens with black pepper, saffron and cardamom, drives into a heart of oud, leather and cedar, and rests on sandalwood, vetiver and grey amber. Unisex, dry and intensely woody, it is one of the house's most uncompromising oud compositions.
The opening hits like cracked black pepper over smouldering wood — dry, spicy, almost austere. Then the oud takes over: dark, leathery, resinous, the kind of deep wood-smoke that fills a room. There is no sweetness to hide behind here; it is all bark, spice and smoke until the grey amber softens the edges hours later. This is a winter-night, special-occasion beast — in Indian heat it will be overwhelming, and even in winter two sprays are plenty. Absolutely not for beginners; oud sceptics should stay far away, and even oud lovers should sample first.
