Composition
Champaca is a unisex eau de parfum from Ormonde Jayne, launched in 2002 and composed by Geza Schoen. Neroli, pink pepper and airy bamboo open into a heart where champaca absolute reigns alongside freesia and fragrant basmati rice. The base features myrrh, musk and green tea. Inspired by the creamy yellow champaca flowers of India.
To me this smells like a monsoon garden in Bengal at first light. Neroli and pink pepper sparkle at the top — citrus blossoms with a rosy kick — and airy bamboo keeps everything green and breathing. Then the champaca blooms, golden and honeyed, the most Indian of flowers, with freesia bright beside it. Rice and green tea give the heart a steamy, almost edible softness — like the air in a kitchen where rice is cooking — and the musk-myrrh base is warm skin and faint resin. It is luminous and calm, like meditation with flowers. Beginner-friendly.
