Composition
1888, from Xerjoff's Casamorati collection, is a spicy-floral eau de parfum. It opens with carnation, pepper, coriander and saffron, reveals ylang-ylang, rose and neroli in the heart, and settles into amber, sandalwood, birch and patchouli.
This opens like walking into a Victorian smoking room that someone tried to cover up with flowers. Clove-peppery carnation and coriander first, saffron glowing underneath like embers, then this dark smoky birch that smells of old leather armchairs and wood polish. Rose and ylang-ylang drift through like perfume on a glove. Later it settles into warm amber and sandalwood, still smoldering. It is opulent, heavy, and absolutely unbothered by modern tastes. The patchouli in the base is dark chocolate and old velvet, holding the smoke and flowers together. It is a scent from a time when perfume was meant to fill a room.
