Composition
The most delicate and subtle expression of oud by Pierre Montale: jasmine and Damascus rose open into cardamom, agarwood, saffron and vetiver, over amber, woods, labdanum, patchouli, Mysore sandalwood and vanilla.
To me this smells like oud wearing a silk shirt — jasmine and Damascus rose opening soft and luminous, almost delicate, before cardamom, saffron and agarwood move in underneath. The vetiver adds a dry, grassy calm, like a field at the very end of summer. It is the subtlest oud Montale makes, but make no mistake: the oud is there, woody and animalic, wrapped in amber, labdanum, patchouli and Mysore sandalwood like smoke in velvet. An education in restraint. Still oud, still not simple. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
