Composition
Pour L'Homme I, launched in 1991 and created by Jacques Polge and François Demachy, is the first of the Ungaro pour L'Homme trilogy — a dark, dandy rose chypre for men. Lavender, bergamot, petitgrain and pine open onto Turkish rose, carnation, artemisia, clary sage and jasmine over oakmoss, sandalwood, benzoin, amber and patchouli.
Pour L'Homme I is a gothic dandy's fragrance — dry lavender, bergamot and pine give way to darkness: Turkish rose, bitter artemisia, carnation and indolic jasmine, like a velvet smoking jacket in an old library. The oakmoss-sandalwood-benzoin base is chypre-deep and mysterious, lifted by a fresh musky light. It is not mass-appealing in the slightest — a foreboding, masterful creation that drove collectors mad after discontinuation. For connoisseurs of classic men's chypres and dark rose scents. Absolutely not for beginners — sample only if you love vintage, challenging masculines; this is art, not comfort.
