Composition
Borneo 1834, launched in 2005 and created by Christopher Sheldrake, takes its name from the year Parisians discovered patchouli — wrapped in the silk it was imported in. Cardamom and galbanum open onto patchouli, white flowers and camphor over cacao and French labdanum.
Borneo 1834 is patchouli as dark chocolate — rich, resinous patchouli wrapped around bitter cacao and smoky labdanum, lifted by green cardamom and galbanum like a Dutch trading ship's hold of silk and spice. The white flowers whisper through rather than soften, keeping the composition mysterious and deep. It is the connoisseur's patchouli: no head-shop earthiness, all velvet darkness. Best in cool weather and evening settings; in India it is a winter-evening masterpiece. Not for beginners — patchouli this concentrated is polarizing; sample first, and wear it only if you love deep, resinous Orientals.
