Composition
Royal English Leather is a leather eau de toilette for women and men, launched in 1781 as the first fragrance created by the House of Creed — commissioned by King George III for his scented gloves. It opens with mandarin orange and bergamot, reveals an ambergris heart, and settles into leather and sandalwood.
To me this is history you can smell. Mandarin and bergamot flash bright for a minute, then ambergris, salty and animalic, and then the leather: dark, polished, unmistakable. Commissioned by King George III for his scented gloves, and it still smells like it, like riding gloves, like old money, like something that has not changed in two and a half centuries because it never needed to. The sandalwood softens it; nothing tames it. Wearing this is wearing a crown you did not ask for. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
