Composition
Oud Maximus (2018) is Bortnikoff's flagship all-natural extrait, dedicated to the perfumer's son Maxim. Laotian, Indian and Thai wild oud oils -- in extreme concentration -- meet four rose oils from India, the Himalayas, Indonesia and France. Citrus and jasmine open it; ambery roses and magnolia form the heart; oud, civet, natural musk, birch tar, vanilla and tolu balsam ground the base.
Oud Maximus is what real exoticism smells like: dense, almost opaque, flowing like a slow dark stream -- animalic Laotian oud wrapped in voluminous roses, softened by natural musk and civet. Not a transparent designer scent; this is Bel Ami-level density for oud lovers. Beginners: this is the deep end -- sample first, wear in winter, one spray.
