Composition
Oscar, launched in 1977 and composed by Jean-Louis Sieuzac, is Oscar de la Renta's debut fragrance and one of the great oriental-florals of the 20th century. Basil, gardenia, peach and orange blossom open onto jasmine, rose, ylang-ylang and tuberose over myrrh, opoponax, sandalwood and amber.
Oscar is a legend — nearly five decades on shelves, and still unmistakable. It opens with a lush, green-floral fanfare of gardenia, basil and peach, then blooms into an opulent bouquet of jasmine, rose, ylang-ylang and tuberose that defined an era of glamour. The myrrh-opoponax-sandalwood base is deep, resinous and warm, like velvet and candlelight. This is grand-dame perfumery: bold, confident, unapologetically rich. In India it is a winter-evening treasure and a connoisseur's choice. Not for beginners — its vintage opulence and power demand experience and the right occasion.
