Composition
Opium by Yves Saint Laurent is a captivating fragrance featuring oriental, spicy, balsamic accords. It opens with Plum, Clove, transitions to a heart of Carnation, Rose, and settles into a base of Myrrh, Opoponax. A timeless creation for the modern connoisseur.
To me it smells like a velvet-draped room in the seventies where the air is thick and nobody is in a hurry. Plum and clove open it — dark, winey, intoxicating — with carnation and rose blooming spicy and opulent through the middle. Myrrh, opoponax and amber rise like smoke from a brass burner, resinous and ancient and endless. This is the original oriental, the scent that shocked the world in 1977, and it still smells like forbidden fruit. Heavy, hypnotic, and utterly legendary. Not for beginners. Beginners stay away.
