Composition
Le De Givenchy is a Woody Floral Musk fragrance for women launched in 1957, later reissued in 2007 under the Les Mythiques homage collection. An old-school glamour floral built around lily-of-the-valley, lilac, orris, jasmine, ylang-ylang, carnation and rose over a woody-musky base of oakmoss, musk, guaiac wood, sandalwood and amber, with a spicy-green aromatic opening of tarragon and coriander.
To me this smells like Audrey Hepburn's dressing room in 1957. Tarragon and coriander open green and herbal — strange, chic, utterly French — with mandarin and bergamot adding a bright citrus lift, Brazilian rosewood warm underneath. Then the florals arrive in their full mid-century glory: lily-of-the-valley, lilac, orris powdery as face powder, jasmine and rose and carnation. The oakmoss-musk base is the soul of it — green, soft, animalic in the old way — with guaiac, sandalwood and amber warming it like stage lights. It is old-school glamour, and it has never once gone out of style. Beginner-friendly.
