Composition
Gold Woman is a floral-aldehydic eau de parfum for women by Guy Robert, launched in 1983 as Amouage's very first fragrance. It opens with lily-of-the-valley, rose and incense, develops incense, jasmine, orris root, myrrh and labdanum in the heart, and settles into civet, musk, sandalwood, amber, cedar, oakmoss, ambergris and patchouli.
To me this smells like a queen's jewelry box that has been locked since 1983 and just been opened — incense, myrrh and labdanum rising first, thick and resinous, with rose and lily-of-the-valley somehow surviving underneath. The dry-down is the legend part: civet and musk animalic and unashamed, sandalwood, amber, oakmoss, ambergris — a whole lost century of perfumery in one breath. This is a museum piece you can wear. Glorious, and utterly unforgiving. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
