Composition
Gianni Versace (1981), the house's first feminine fragrance, a full-bodied floral chypre loaded with oakmoss. Aldehydes, spices, fruity notes and bergamot open green and classic, blooming into an extravagant floral heart of carnation, tuberose, narcissus, gardenia, orris root, jasmine and lily-of-the-valley. The base of oakmoss, benzoin, myrrh, incense, amber, sandalwood, leather and patchouli is dark, opulent and commanding.
To me this smells like 1981 in all its unapologetic glory — aldehydes and spices and fruity notes opening green and electric over bergamot, and then a full chypre bloom: carnation, tuberose, narcissus, gardenia, orris, jasmine, lily-of-the-valley, all piled high like a wedding that got out of hand. The base is a cathedral of oakmoss, benzoin, myrrh, incense, amber, sandalwood, leather and patchouli — dark, mossy, magnificent. They simply do not make them like this anymore, for better and for worse. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
