Composition
An offering of woody, dry, hot, smoky notes by the house of Montale: elemi, incense of Somalia and labdanum — the sacred resins of trees — in harmony with cedarwood and patchouli leaves.
To me this smells like a church door opening onto a bonfire — elemi striking sharp and resinous first, then incense and labdanum rising in thick, dry, sacred smoke. Cedarwood and patchouli hold the smoke up like pillars, woody and austere, and the whole thing burns hot and dry for hours. This is not incense as atmosphere; it is incense as offering. Primitive, holy, and completely uncompromising. The patchouli is dark and earthy, like damp soil in a sacred grove. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
