Composition
Boss Number One, launched in 1985, is a rich aromatic-spicy fragrance for men and one of Hugo Boss's earliest scents. Artemisia, juniper, bergamot, lemon, green apple, caraway, basil and grapefruit open the composition, with honey, lavender, rose, jasmine, sage, geranium, lily-of-the-valley and orris root at the heart. Tobacco, oakmoss, patchouli, sandalwood, musk, amber, cinnamon and cedar form the dry-down.
To me this smells like my grandfather's study in 1985 — artemisia and juniper sharp as his wit, bergamot and green apple from the cologne he splashed on like he meant it. Then the honey arrives, thick and golden, wrapping lavender and rose in something almost edible. This is the 80s at full volume: tobacco and oakmoss like the inside of his favorite armchair, patchouli dark as old wood paneling, amber and cinnamon glowing underneath. It doesn't do subtle. It does presence — the kind that enters the room before you do. A masterpiece from when men wore fragrance like armor. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
