Composition
Arabian Wood is a woody chypre Eau de Parfum launched in 2009 in Tom Ford's Private Blend collection. Despite its name, it is a verdant, mossy floral: opening with lavender, Bulgarian rose, freesia, orange blossom, green galbanum and bergamot over a lush floral heart of ylang ylang, rose absolute, jasmine, gardenia, honey and orris. The base blends patchouli, cedarwood, oak moss, sandalwood, tonka bean and amber.
To me this smells like a mossy walled garden where roses have been blooming for a hundred years — lavender, Bulgarian rose, freesia and orange blossom opening lush and green, galbanum snapping like crushed stems. The heart is a full flower market: ylang-ylang, jasmine, gardenia, honey thick in the air. Patchouli, oakmoss, cedarwood and sandalwood moss it all down into a woody chypre, with tonka and amber glowing underneath. Verdant, romantic, and quietly grand. The Private Blend nobody talks about, and everybody should. Beginner-friendly.
