Composition
Féminité du Bois, re-released in the Serge Lutens line in 2009 (originally 1992 for Shiseido) and created by Christopher Sheldrake and Pierre Bourdon, was the first fragrance built around a masculine core — cedarwood — for women. Ginger, cinnamon, clove and plum open onto peach, orange blossom, violet and rose over cedar, sandalwood, vanilla and benzoin.
Féminité du Bois is a milestone in perfumery — dry, pencil-shaving Atlas cedar wrapped in honeyed plum, violet and peach, with ginger and cinnamon adding a slow Moroccan burn. It expresses, in Lutens's words, the masculine side of femininity and vice versa: a dark, honeyed wood rubbed with candied fruit and sweet balms. It is sensual, warm and utterly distinctive — the template for every woody-fruity-spicy Lutens that followed. Best in cool weather; in India it is a beautiful October-to-February evening scent. Not for beginners — its cedar-forward character and spiced fruit are unlike anything in designer perfumery; sample first to appreciate its revolutionary beauty.
