Chergui, launched in 2001 and created by Christopher Sheldrake, is Serge Lutens's love letter to the Moroccan desert wind — a warm, smoldering oriental-spicy with honeyed tobacco, powdery iris and amber. Hay, iris and rose open onto honey, tobacco leaf and incense over amber, sandalwood and musk.
Chergui is a fire fanned by a desert wind — dry hay and powdery iris give way to sweet honey and smoky tobacco leaf wrapped in incense, like a Moroccan souk at dusk with embers glowing under the stalls. The amber-sandalwood-musk base is warm, cozy and endlessly enveloping. It is one of niche perfumery's most beloved creations: sweet yet dry, smoky yet comforting, exotic yet intimate. In India it shines from October to February, especially on cool evenings. Not for beginners — the bold honeyed-tobacco sweetness and hay accord are distinctive; sample first to see if its magic works on your skin.
