Composition
XJ 1861 Renaissance, from Xerjoff's 1861 collection, is a citrus-aromatic eau de parfum. It opens with Amalfi lemon, tangerine, bergamot and petitgrain, reveals mint, lily-of-the-valley and rose in the heart, and settles into musk, Virginia cedar, patchouli and amber.
To me this smells like the Italian Renaissance — or at least the postcard version. Amalfi lemon and tangerine and bergamot, citrus piled high as a market stall; petitgrain and mint, green and cool as a marble fountain; lily-of-the-valley and rose, soft and classical. Musk and cedar and patchouli and amber underneath, like old stone warmed by sun. It's bright, fresh, impeccably composed — the smell of a perfect day in a perfect city, 500 years ago or yesterday. Timeless in the truest sense. Beginner-friendly.
