Composition
Pour Monsieur by Chanel is a men's Chypre fragrance launched in 1955 and sold as an Eau de Toilette. It opens with Sicilian lemon, petitgrain and neroli, has a spicy-aromatic heart of cardamom, ginger, coriander and basil, and rests on a base of oakmoss, vetiver and cedar.
To me this smells like 1955 in the best possible way. Sicilian lemon and neroli snap first, bright and bitter-green, petitgrain like crushed leaves between your fingers. Cardamom and ginger warm the middle — spice, but the polite kind — with coriander and basil keeping it crisp. Then oakmoss and vetiver pull it into the shade: earthy, mossy, impeccably groomed over cedar. The scent of a man who irons his handkerchiefs and means it. A classic any nose can appreciate.
