Composition
Encre Noire by Lalique is a 2006 Woody Aromatic fragrance for men, composed by Nathalie Lorson. Built around Haitian and Bourbon vetiver with cypress, cashmere wood and musk, it is a dark, inky woods scent inspired by the 'Biches' inkwell René Lalique designed in 1913. A cult classic and one of the best-value designer vetivers ever made.
It opens with dark green cypress, sharp and almost black-ink-like — the name 'black ink' is literal. The heart is pure vetiver: earthy, rooty, slightly smoky, like rain on dry soil in a forest. The drydown is cashmere wood and soft musk, smooth but never sweet. In an Indian winter this is a masterpiece — brooding, elegant, endlessly complimented; in peak summer heat it can feel heavy, so spray light. Not really for beginners: it's dark, dry and uncompromising, and the vetiver divides opinion. But at its price, it's the cheapest way to smell genuinely niche.
