Composition
Gentleman (1974) is the original Givenchy men's fragrance launched in 1974, an audacious warm woody-spicy scent. It opens with honey, rose, cinnamon, tarragon, bergamot and lemon over a heart of patchouli, cedar, orris root and jasmine, resting on a deep base of patchouli, leather, civet, oakmoss, vetiver, musk, amber and vanilla.
To me this smells like 1974 walked into the room wearing a brown suit and didn't ask permission. Honey, rose, cinnamon and tarragon open rich and unapologetic — sweet, spiced, almost edible — over bergamot and lemon brightness. Then the seventies arrive in full: patchouli, cedar, orris and jasmine giving way to a base of leather, civet, oakmoss, vetiver and musk. This is the original audacious masculine: warm, woody-spicy, animalic at the edges, built for a decade that didn't believe in subtlety. It smells like vinyl records, wood-paneled studies, and confidence that would get you stared at today. Glorious — and not for the faint-hearted. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
