Composition
Encre Noire À L'Extrême is the intense edition of Lalique's ink-dark vetiver series, released for the line's tenth anniversary. Cypress, elemi resin and bergamot open before a heart of Haitian and Java vetiver, incense and orris. The base deepens with benzoin, sandalwood and patchouli for a darker, smokier character than the original.
If Encre Noire is ink, this is ink mixed with temple smoke. Cypress and elemi resin open sharp and balsamic, like crushed leaves and fresh resin, and then the vetiver arrives doubled — Haitian and Java — rooty and dark, with incense curling through it like evening aarti smoke and orris adding a cold, powdery distance. Benzoin, sandalwood, and patchouli in the base make it resinous and warm underneath the severity. It is intense, smoky, uncompromising — a scent that fills a room before you do. Beautiful, but it demands a certain mood and a certain spine. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
