Composition
Boss Spirit, launched in 1989, is an aromatic green eau de toilette for men. Artemisia, wormwood, galbanum, mint, green notes and aldehydes open the scent, with tarragon, geranium and lavender at the heart. Leather, sandalwood, patchouli and amber form the dry-down.
To me this is 1989 in a bottle, and it does not care what you think. Artemisia and wormwood and galbanum blast green and bitter at the top — herbal, almost medicinal, like crushed leaves and cold mint — tarragon and lavender and geranium keeping it in classic fougère territory. It smells like a boardroom where decisions were made and cigarettes were smoked indoors. Leather, sandalwood, patchouli and amber dry it down into something dark and leathery and formidable. This is vintage power in the old sense — big, green, unapologetic. Modern noses may find it harsh. Vintage lovers will find it perfect. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
