Composition
Balafre is a masculine eau de toilette from Lancôme, launched in 1967. It opens with Green Notes, Lime, Chamomile, Cypress, Lavender and Neroli. The heart reveals Pine Needles, Clary Sage, Geranium, Carnation and Cedar settling into a base of Oakmoss, Vetiver, Leather, Musk and Amber. Its character is defined by Aromatic, Woody and Green accords.
To me this smells like a 1967 film star's dressing room — green notes and lime sharp as the flashbulbs, chamomile and lavender from the tea going cold on the vanity, cypress dark as the velvet curtains. It's a time capsule, and it's a glorious one. Pine needles and clary sage keep it herbal and severe, carnation adding its clove-like bite, and then the base: oakmoss, vetiver, leather — the holy trinity of old-school masculinity — musk and amber warming it like the footlights. They don't make them like this anymore. That's the point, and the problem. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
