Tonka BeanStar noteCostusAn absinthe-inspired green fougere from L'Oeuvre Noire by Calice Becker. African orange flower, geranium, bergamot, rose and wormwood open into lavender, patchouli, oakmoss, amber and vanilla, with tonka bean and costus in the base.
To me this smells like an absinthe bar in Belle Époque Paris — African orange flower, geranium and wormwood opening green and slightly dangerous, herbal and electric. The bergamot flashes citrus-bright, like sunlight passing through green glass. Lavender, patchouli and oakmoss turn it into a proper green fougère, dark and mossy, while amber, vanilla and tonka sweeten the base into something warm and strange. Costus adds that odd, skin-like hum underneath. Peculiar, green, and quietly brilliant. The tonka is warm and hay-like, like a summer field at dusk. Beginner-friendly.
