Antaeus by Chanel is a men's Woody Chypre fragrance launched in 1981 as an Eau de Toilette. It opens with myrrh, clary sage, coriander, bergamot, lime and Amalfi lemon, has an aromatic-floral heart of thyme, basil, rose and jasmine, and a base of castoreum, oakmoss, patchouli and French labdanum.
Scent story
To me this smells like a nightclub built inside a temple in 1981. Myrrh and clary sage burn first, resinous and aromatic, citrus flashing like neon through smoke. The heart is all dark herbs and crushed flowers — thyme, basil, rose, jasmine — underfoot on a stone floor. Then the base: castoreum and oakmoss, animalic and earthy, patchouli and French labdanum smouldering like the last coals of a fire. It is magnificent and completely uncompromising. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
