Calone

“The marine molecule — watery melon and sea-spray freshness, the heart of aquatic scents.”

Calone is the molecule that launched a thousand aquatic fragrances, a synthetic compound discovered in the 1960s that smells unmistakably like watermelon rind, sea breeze and ozone. It is the defining scent of 1990s fresh perfumery and remains the backbone of most marine fragrances today. On its own it is almost aggressively watery-melon; blended well, it creates that irresistible fresh-out-of-the-ocean feeling. You will recognise it instantly in classic aquatics. In Indian summers, calone-based scents are among the most refreshing options available, they read as cool and clean even in extreme humidity. The only caution is that cheap calone-heavy scents can smell synthetic in high heat, so look for well-blended versions where woods and musks ground the watermelon sparkle.
