Animal Notes
Animal notes is a catch-all term for the musky, leathery, slightly wild facets in perfumery that come from ingredients like civet, castoreum, ambergris and natural musk. Together they create warmth, sensuality and a skin-like depth that clean synthetics struggle to replicate. In small doses they make florals smell richer, orientals smell deeper and musks smell more human. Modern perfumery mostly uses synthetic or plant-derived versions for ethical and regulatory reasons, but the effect remains, that barely-there wildness that makes a perfume smell alive rather than sterile. In Indian weather, animalic touches work best in evening and winter fragrances, where cooler air softens their intensity into something alluring. By day in the heat, keep them sheer or skip them entirely.
